Taken from his 1982 album Face to Face, legendary Canadian disco producer Gino Soccio is the provider of this week’s Friday wind down track with the superb ‘You Move Me’. A sultry and funky disco boogie number, its slinky and silky grooves will have you panting for the weekend and what not.

Gino Soccio – You Move Me

We’ve got an absolute disco monster today, as I delve into my West End Records collection once again to bring you this 1977 gem from Michele.  Mixed and produced by Tom Moulton, this epic thirteen minute dazzler was Patrick Cowley’s first production credit (I’ve plumped for Moulton’s mega mix version for today’s SOTD). The track really gets going around the seven minute mark, when the cosmic groove wallops along with a hypnotic and drugged-out splendour. It’s spine-tingling stuff and the magic of Cowley and Moulton really shines. Basically, you will want to sniff poppers and stare at flashing lights for a bit after you’ve listened to it. Marvellous!

Michele – Disco Dance (Tom Moulton Mega Mix)

Taken from their 2008 album Eight Oh Eight, today’s Single of the Day comes courtesy of the brilliant Black Devil Disco Club. A dark and pulsating cosmic oddity, the dub version of ‘For Hoped’ navigates the listener through a cyber futuristic jungle of hypnotic rhythms and sounds and serves as a reminder of BDDC’s mastermind Bernard Fevre’s warped genius (he’s the nice gentleman in the picture).

Having been recently included on the excellent Lo Recordings’ compilation ‘Milky Disco III – To The Stars’, I recommend that you get your hands on some Black Devil goodness ASAP! So click here and here for your exhilarating and spooky mid-week treat!!

Released on the Sonoton label in 1978, Quango and Sparky’s self-titled LP apparently was a soundtrack to a saucy flick! Providing the hot and heavy sounds to ‘A Girl’s Best Friend’, the album is packed with some ‘deep’ and ‘meaty’ (sorry) disco cuts and some sexy library music as the track ‘Soljering On’ ably demonstrates.  Produced by Jean Claude Madonne & Sammy Burdson, the record remains a playful and alluring disco delight.

Going for shedloads on Discogs and unlike other skin flick soundtracks, this is a substantial and timeless disco rarity and  I highly recommend that you try and track it down. Failing that, you can always grab Al Kent’s brilliant 2005 compilation ‘Disco Demands Vol.1’, which features this track.

Quango – Soljering On

Renowned for her immortal 1979 Italo-Disco crossover track, ‘Take A Chance’ (A TK Records classic btw), The Queen of HI-NRG and dance, Queen Samantha, released today’s SOTD, ‘Give Me Action’ in 1982. A superb disco bomb that glitters and sparkles like the bright city lights of eighties New York, this is definitely a cut above your average disco boogie track. A sleek and stomping classic, this will have you twirling and strutting at your desk like a crazy funkin’ machine. Or something similar.

Queen Samantha – Give Me Action

The summer is not all fun in the sun for those of us who have to go to boring work, in fact Eddie Cochrane penned his classic 1958 rock ‘n’ roll anthem, ‘Summertime Blues’ to all the dispirited kids who had to work at Boots in Tamworth over the holidays (yes, that was me dear reader.). Covered by the likes of The Who, Blue Cheer, T-Rex and countless others, my favourite version of Eddie’s masterpiece is The Flying Lizards disjointed and oh-so cool version from 1978 (I also recommend Olivia Newton John’s cover if ya fancy a laugh).

The David Cunningham-fronted group slow down the song and add their renowned post-modernist nonchalance to the track, which really captures how depressing and mind-numbing it is to bloody work in a office, shop or factory over the bloomin’ summer holidays.

Anyway, for all of you that are stuck in the office today, this one’s for you.

The Flying Lizards – Summertime Blues

Mixed by the one and only Francois Kevorkian, Forrrce’s ‘Keep On Dancin’ (Phase II)’ was released in 1980 on Mel Cheren’s ubiquitous West End Records.  A personal favourite of Mel’s, it’s a sure-fire party track where liquid funk meets reverb-filed disco with added cowbells and sound effects thrown in for groovy measure.

Released in 1984 on Gong records, this moody New Wave meets Italo ode to automobiles is one of the most sought-after Italo disco records amongst collectors. Going for over £500(!) on Discogs, this is a sumptuous and throbbing single that’s reminiscent of Sam Fox’s classic ‘Touch Me’. But that’s a good thing. Trust me, it is. God, it’s good to be back.

Zazou/Biyake/C1’s Noir Et Blanc is a classic Afro-electronic fusion LP (but let’s face it, how many classic Afro-electronic fusion records are there? Let me know!). The futuristic combination of Congolese vocals (courtesy of Bona Biyake) with  warped analog synthesizers,  the track ‘Dyu Ya Feza’ still sounds astonishing, especially when you  consider  that it was recorded way back in 1983. A synthetic-rhythmic-post-modern-hypnotic-Afro-synth corker!  Vuvuzela!!!

Feeling disappointed and disheartened by the lacklustre start to the World Cup? Fear not dear readers, as this fun-filled cover of a Chic classic will get your World Cup lovin’ mojo back!

Charanga 76’s spaced-out Latin tribute to Nile Rodgers & crew’s finest track was released in 1979 and has a certain touch of class that separates it from your usual run-of-the-mill foreign language disco cover versions. With bustling Cuban percussion, striking strings and a lovely summery echo filled breakdown, this will blast away your thoughts of the Jubulani ball and most importantly, drown out those bloody vuvuzelas (topical!!).
