After god knows how long, I’ve finally gotten around to recording a new mix. Hurrah! Simply entitled The Omega Tapes, this hour-long compilation contains the songs that have been rocking my world for the past few months or so.  From Hyetal’s superb post-dubstep electronics to 100% Silk’s Ital and Innergaze’s drugged-out disco (and lots of weird bleeps and sounds in between), I visualized this mix to be the soundtrack to one of the Omega Man’s many post-apocalyptic car cruises. Recorded just in time for this weekend’s Magic Waves Festival (have I mentioned that this week??), this delicious mix comes from one the finest purveyors of all things Italo, electro and everything in-between. Co-founder of Cyber Dance records with Ali Renault and Spruxx and creator of Magic Waves internet radio show aaand the aforementioned festival, Casionova is one of the stalwarts of the underground Italo/electro scene (and all round good guy). Devastating dance floors with his electric and beguiling mix of Italo pop and synth disco, this specially curated mix glides and bewitches and is a tantalising taster for the upcoming festival.

As our Surreal week draws to an end, we’re very pleased and honoured to present to you, our very, very lucky reader, an exclusive and sublime mix from the extraordinary Moon Wiring Club.

Moon Wiring Club have always been a big favourite over here at Days Are Numbers. Their spell-binding and spectacular collages of sound recall the majestic and ghostly world of BBC Radiophonic Workshop, lost 60s/70s British kid’s TV shows, vintage radio cues, loops and library music, with a bit of Hammer Horror thrown in.

Crafting songs that brim with haunting rhythms and melodies, their music is enchanting and eerie but always captivating. It was only appropriate for us to ask them for a wonderfully delicious ‘Surreal’ mix, and thankfully, they kindly agreed.

Breakthru Radio Mix

Daysarenumbers are the lucky recipients of an exclusive mix from one of most exciting UK bands around, Gyratory System. Wowing audiences and critics alike with their hallucinatory brand of post-punk and electronics, we were over the moon when Andrew kindly agreed to do a special mix for us during our Downtown Week. He also wrote us a lovely introduction.

Here’s Andrew, with a few words…

Here’s a selection of music that has influenced the Gyratory System sound. In keeping with this week’s theme we have included some downtown-type stuff, by Konk, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Laurie Anderson; and Material. It is certainly a unique period in music and its juxtaposition of repetition and chaos is something we emulate. There is also a selection of other things – British music from Joe Meek, Loop and Nightmares on Wax; Afrobeat from Fela Kuti; Miles Davis playing jazz fanfares; and something by the French modernist composer Olivier Messiaen. People sometimes ask us where our sound comes from, hopefully listening to this mix will help answer that question. Andrew GS.

The Luv You Madly Orchestra was a special Duke Ellington disco tribute band put together by producer Stephen James. Their self-titled debut LP was released in 1978 on the legendary Salsoul, but today’s SOTD is all about Walter Gibbons’ exceptional mixing duties on the 12″ single ‘Moon Maiden’ and this, its b-side.

‘Rocket Rock’ is more conventional than ‘Moon Maiden’ but still has that weird and wonderful Gibbons’ touch. The cosmic strings and opulent percussion only show off a tiny part of Gibbons’ eccentric genius.

I could go on and on about Walter Gibbons today but I won’t, as the special guy deserves a much bigger feature than this. As one the unique talents of disco, Gibbons’ work through production to DJing has left an indelible mark on modern dance culture. As I mentioned before, a proper Walter feature (ho!) is probably in order. (I’ll start planning one asap). So go on, take a ride.
