Wow! It’s the first SOTD of 2010! To mark such an extraordinary occasion, how about a mad track from Edwin Starr? Go on, you know you want to! Released in 1980, this superb track is a deliciously deranged whirlpool (chortle!) of soul and is an excellent off-kilter disco stomper. Hypnotic, tranced-out synths blend inconspicuously with Edwin’s crazy-ass shouting, before morphing itself into a stone-cold funk number. Put it this way, it’s waaay better than War. And what was that good for? Eh???

Edwin Starr – Get – Up Whirlpool

Formed in 1980, The (Hypothetical) Prophets were duo Bernard Szajner and Karel Beer. An ephemeral French coldwave band, they released a series of 12” singles and one full length record before their quick demise.

Despite a short discography, the band’s craft was unique. Singing in both their native tongue as well as English and alternating between male and female vocals, the dozen or so songs recorded under this name are haunting minimal wave at its finest, a mixture of harsh electronic experimentation and catchy pulses of synth.

The Hypothetical – Prophets Person To Person

As you can probably guess from the massive accompanying picture, this Ghoulish Delight is taken from the crap 1980 slasher film Don’t Go In The House. Often cited as one of the most DISTURBING VIDEO NASTIES BAN THIS SICK FILTH film ever, it’s actually a ridiculous tale of a Norman Bates type character who has pyromania. What a premise eh? Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, it’s a bit shit but the one redeeming feature that should pique your curiosity, is the film’s soundtrack.

During the late seventies and early eighties, slasher films were awash with funky, wah-wah disco tracks, the majority being utterly awful and a minority being, well, good. If you’re sad bastard like me and love to trawl hours and hours of YouTube clips of crap seventies horror films for a good song; then a song like Struck By Boogie Lightning will be your reward. Basically, if you look hard enough you WILL find a decent slasher disco song. The song itself is a dramatic, high octane number (funnily enough, the song is not played during some mad scene from the movie but actually during a scene in a clothes shop! See video below), that even has thunder and lightning sounds which will enhance your Halloween party immensely. A favourite of legendary cosmic DJ Beppe Loda, this is a massive lightning boogie bolt, but before you put your dancing shoes on, have a good ol’ laugh at the aforementioned shop scene. Hilarious!

Hello boys and ghouls…

Halloween is soon approaching, so we at Daysarenumbers thought we would give you some devilish delights and some terror – or terrible puns from here till Saturday. So, expect the best picks of dastardly disco, macabre movie moments and shitloads of scary stuff!!! Well, not that scary. But you know what I mean.

So let’s get spooky with our first ghoulish delight…

Everyone has seen at least one episode of Hammer House of Horror, right? (If you haven’t, check out Men & Motors on a Sunday night at 9pm! It finishes just in time for Match of the Day 2. Perfect!)

Campy, hilarious and sometimes actually really scary, only 13 episodes were made and everyone from Denholm Elliot and Diana Dors starred in creepy tales that ranged from bleeding houses to demented children. For me, the undisputed highlight of the show was the fantastic theme tune by Roger Webb. A sweeping, eerie number that is almost wistful, it’s sumptuous strings entice you into a false sense of calm, making you all relaxed before you watch a house bleed to death. Once you’ve heard it, you’ll never forget it and you’ll want to hear it all the time. A stirring, creepy easy listening masterpiece, it’s the perfect way to kick off your Halloween.
