Whatever We (Or You) Want!

August 12, 2008 8:20 pm / by / no comments

Exciting and a fleeting post today, as we’ve got some excellent tunes for your ears. From the new Rong/DFA sampler ‘Notwave’ to the rarer than anything ever Whatever We Want releases and some juicy stuff like Radio Slave, LCD Soundsystem and White Light Circus in between oh and a little Morricone surprise at the end. To the Batmobile!

V/A – NOTWAVE COMPILATION SAMPLER VOL.1 (RONG/DFA)

STRIPLIGHT/TUSSLE/WELCOME STRANGER - Notwave Sampler 1 (Front Cover)

Just a taster for the upcoming no wave inspired CD ‘Notwave’, Rong and DFA have got together the finest producers around to contribute tracks to what is shaping up to be a rather intriging prospect. Tussle, Striplight and Welcome stranger are on this 12″ sampler, the former two with remixes by Tim Love Lee and Liquid Liquid’s Sal Principato and Dennis Young but I have gone for Welcome Strangers’ rather salacious  ‘Smoke Machine’. Taking it’s cue from Mancini’s all conquering classic ’Peter Gunn’ and sleazing it up a notch makes this the actual aural equivalent of a smoke machine but only with a really bad attitude. (p.s I think this has something to do with the ever-so talented Thomas Bullock, speaking of which… see the next post)

WHATEVER WE WANT SPECIAL BIT.

Whatever We Want are back with a clutch of limited releases. Always an event when these guys release something and this time is no different. Everyone from djhistory.com to err me are going crazy in our attempts to capture at least one of the releases, luckily for you I managed to get two out of the three (my bank account took one helleva beating – let me tell you this, WWE releases do not come cheap) so yay! for me at least.  Still a little bit disheartened about missing out on ’Re-Imagined In Alphabet City’ by Dr. Dunk -  which is the guise used by Eric Duncan (one half of Rub ‘n’ Tug), as it’s a pair of beautifully crafted balearic edits of tracks by 70s Italo producer Savage. If you keep an eye out you can still get copies of all the releases but you will have to be quick as there is only a limited amount as I found out. Nevermind eh? Let’s move on to what I managed to get.

BOBBIE MARIE – CHOO CHOO TRAIN/SHIP OVER BOARD (WHATEVER WE WANT)

back

A man of many talents, Thomas Bullock (Map Of Africa, Rub ‘n’ Tug and Welcome Stranger – the star of the previous post) returns with his Bobbie Marie project. Teaming up with Rene Perez, the pair conjure up this beguiling, utterly enthralling mental psych-infused record. The A-side is a stuttering slightly rock ‘n’ roll rhythmic excursion over broken pianos, synths and howling vocals. A ricketing sneer. Things get all druggy on the B-side, ‘Ship Over Board’ will burrow in your head and start making you feel all giddy and will make you want to take loads of drugs. So all in all a wondrous record!

THE LAUGHING LIGHT OF PLENTY – THE ROSE (WHATEVER WE WANT)

Why, it’s only that man again Thomas Bullock! That man is a genius I tells ya. There’s a lot of ‘buzz’ around Laughing Light Of Plenty, as they could well be one of the names to look out for in 2009. Listen for yourself whether you think they are a hit or a miss, ‘The Rose’ manages to be a psych-groover, a balearic-disco number and even hints at a baggy influence (early Stone Roses not Inspiral Carpets or The Farm). No doubt about it, this is destined to be huuuuge (in London).

Hope you enjoyed the special, as I briefly mentioned on earlier, if you do see any Whatever We Want records on sale try and snap them up because a) they will be worth a few bob in the future and b) these guys rarely put a foot wrong. So get searching!

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM – BIG IDEAS (BABYTALK REMIX) (DFA)

LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - Big Ideas (Front Cover)

Taken from that crap gambling film (I can’t remember what it was called – it had Kevin Spacey in it), LCD Soundsystem’s specially recorded track for the soundtrack gets a nice dark remix by Stickydisc’s Babytalk. Totally rehauling the original from a fast, shouty number to a off-kilter New Order sounding nu-disco record is a stroke of genius. Bravo Babytalk!

WHITE LIGHT CIRCUS – BREAK THE CIRCUIT/UP TO ROT (DC RECORDINGS)

WHITE LIGHT CIRCUS - Break The Circuit (Front Cover)

White Light Circus are back with this magnificent electroid-android wig-out double header. Dean Meredith (one half of Chicken Lips) really pulls out all the stops for their comeback, ‘Break The Circuit’ is a crazy sounding trip through a circuit board or through the brain of a robot and feeling every synapse. A bleeps ‘an all track. On the flip ‘Up To Rot’ sounds like a tribute to Laidback’s ‘White Horse’ but way more sinister – like a cover version if it were done by HAL is the probably the best way to describe it. OVERLOAD!!!.

RADIO SLAVE – EYES WIDE OPEN/INCOGNITO (R&S)

RADIO SLAVE - Eyes Wide Open (Front Cover)

The mighty Radio Slave return on what is a special occasion for classic label R&S. It’s been ten years since R&S’s last release and what a way to return. Getting Radio Slave (Matt Edwards) to produce two massive hypnotic techno-infused bombs is simply inspired. Both the tracks have the ability to rock any dancefloor, with the combination of heavy percussion, slow-building key riffs and snippets of exotic vocals you really can’t go wrong with this.

ENNIO MORRICONE – HORROR MOVIES (TAKEN FROM THE FILM ‘A MAN’S TRAGEDY’) (DRG)

TRAGEDY OF A RIDICULOUS MAN 1981 Bernardo Bertolucci ITALIAN POSTER

And finally, a nice end-of-post treat for you all. I’m not going to go into much detail about the Bertolucci film from which this crazy song is taken from because I’m sure that in the future Alan will have a Bernardo Bertolucci/Ennio Morricone special. What can I say about this song? Well, it manages to infuse disco, new wave and punk all together in that weird-not sure if its naff-but could be good-80s Italian movie kinda way.  A good laugh mind you and a great track to play at Halloween as the singer (sounding like an Italian Siouxsie) goes on about how she likes horror movies (!) and then proceeds to name her favourites. It’s also about being different but let’s face it we’re all a bit different, aren’t we?
