Single of the Day – Telex – Euro-Vision

May 28, 2010 3:02 pm / by / 4 comments

As it’s Eurovision tomorrow, I thought I would post one of my favourite Eurovision moments ever! Trust me, it’s amazing!

Seminal Belgian electronic band Telex were asked by their manager to represent Belgium in the 1980 competition, the bemused band agreed although they didn’t take it entirely seriously… As group member Marc Moulin would later explain, “”We had hoped to finish last, but Portugal decided otherwise. We got ten points from them and finished on the 19th spot.”  Oh, Telex! You crazy rebels!

Anyway, their effort is a crazy, off-kilter electro-pop song with plenty of Eurovision-kitsch. (I’m sure Sebastien Tellier was taking notes for his Eurovision entry for France in 2008.) I won’t say anymore as you have to see and this fantastic loopy spectacle for yourself.

You were robbed Telex, robbed!!!!

Viva Europe!!!

Great Eurovision entry. Love the keyboard bit at the end.

This is definitely a great Eurovision entry, and proof that, kitsch aside, the competition has certainly had its moments. See also France Gall’s Gainsbourg-penned winner from 1965, and that Sebastian Tellier one was magnifique!.

This year I liked Estonia’s Jarvis-esque fop, Slovenia’s folk/metal hybrid, Russia’s creepy ballad, Lithuania’s sparkly pants, and a decidedly retro number from Holland. Sadly, only one of these (Russia) made the final!

I’ve just put 25 quid on Belgium’s Tracey Chapman rip-off to win!

Yes, I love Eurovision… Fuck you if you don’t!

Oh I agree alan!! Eurovision is the way forward, I do think that my favourite this year had to be Albania! Although Belgium should have taken it!!
    ‘Euro-vision!!!’

Too right! I would have won a cool grand had Belgium triumphed! Drat!

It seemed to be the performance that went down best on the night, but in the end, it just wasn’t quite “big” enough for Eurovision.

I think Germany deserved to win, really. They managed to accomplish the rare feat of contributing something quite contemporary, and the singer was a fun little poppet who was clearly having the time of her life. A bit like the Norwegian boy last year.

Let this also prove that “friendly” votes alone do not win Eurovision, as everyone hates Germany traditionally. Also, Norway last year, the Gerries this year… Can everybody stop bleating about this imaginary Eastern European domination now? It only ever existed in Terry Wogan’s head!

I hope the UK aren’t going to sulk too much over their dismal performance. On the night it was the worst song (bar Belarus, which was HIDEOUS), and that Josh lad was a charisma-free zone. Can’t we get Jarvis Cocker or Saint Etienne to do it next year? Fuck Pete Waterman.

I thought the top 5 should have been: 1. Germany 2. Romania (probably the catchiest song of them all, it’s still in my bastard head) 3. Belgium (dreary, yes, but different) 4. Denamark (proper Eurovision, and the girl was in Kid Creole and The Coconuts!) 5. Albania (proper barnstormer). I liked Russia, too, but it WAS odd.

Can someone tell me why Turkey was so popular? It was hardly Lordi, was it?

Anyway, enough Eurovision… Roll on the World Cup!
