I’ve just heard that Maurice Jarre has passed away. As a mark of respect for the film composer extraordinaire (and dad of Jean Michel) we’re going to roll forward our weekly tribute to Ennio Morricone til tomorrow.
Born in Lyon, France in 1924, Jarre would gain international fame, legendary status, and not one, but two Oscars for his work with David Lean on Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago. He turned in literally scores of scores right up until the turn of the century, with The Man Who Would Be King, The Last Tycoon, and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome proving particularly memorable.
My personal favourite score of Jarre’s is his quirky, catchy and spooky set for Georges Franju’s haunting Gallic slasher Eyes Without a Face, but it doesn’t get much better than this…
Maurice Jarre RIP
