Bastardo!

September 9, 2008 8:27 pm / by / no comments

Yoo Hoo! Don’t get too offended by the header, it’s just to give you a hilarious clue about the post.  So, we have a re-edit of a song called Bastard, a couple modern italo/electro records and Giorgio Moroder (who is not a bastard). What you waiting for? Get reading/listening.

MOTT THE HOOPLE – BASTARD (A MOUNTAIN OF ONE RE-WORK) (WHITE LABEL)

AM01 REWORK - Bastard (Front Cover)

After waiting a few weeks to get my hands on this exclusive re-edit (the first batch it was reported, were really warped and not at all ready for public consumption), I am relieved to have this finally filed away in my record box. A Mountain Of One are the current nu-balearic darlings and this re-work stomps majestically in a cosmic-rock kinda way. Tough and funky (I know – I used the word funky), this will dominate the dancefloors till winter and you thought Mott The Hoople were only famous for being a curly haired glam rock band that sang the Bowie penned ’All The Young Dudes’. Tut. Shame on you.

METRONOMY – A THING FOR ME (BECAUSE MUSIC)

METRONOMY - Nights Out (Front Cover)

Metronomy return with a splendid album shock! Not really, as we all know they were rather good in the first place. The album ‘Nights Out’ blends everything from electro, ‘Wickerman’-esque folk and  oddball pop into a warped, falsetto-laden vision of the future. Basically everything Hot Chip shoulda done but didn’t. Oh, and you can dance to it too.

HEARTBREAK – LIVING JUST FOR FUN (LEX)

HEARTBREAK - Lies, Lex

You wait ages for one Italo band then one actually comes along, who would have thought it? Italo (yes! It’s that new, cool word that Vogue told you all about! Wankers), is making a bit of a comeback (it never went away for us of pure italo thoughts and hearts, chortle.) apparently, in East London. So it’s definitely the next big thing. Glad that’s confirmed. Anywaaaaay, we should really talk about  Heartbreak’s outrageously fun debut record ‘Lies’. It’s the closest thing to a honest and modern hommage to Italo – big synths, disco fox-esque vocals, 808 drum pads, the lot. The chosen track ‘Living Just For Fun’ is a nice chilled italo/balearic number that would not seem out of place on the ‘Out Run’ soundtrack or on a nice quiet bit on  ‘Miami Vice’. Oh and Ali if you’re reading this, I still have that mix tape I promised you all those years ago – well, last year, if you’re still interested . Sorry for the delay. Aneet x

GIORGIO MORODER – EVOLUTION (CASABLANCA)

MORODER, Giorgio - Evolution (Front Cover)

Giorgio, Giorgio, where for art thou Giorgio? Close to my heart, that’s where you are my friend. What a way to round off a post with a bit of vintage Moroder. One of my favourites G.M tunes, ‘Evolution’ is a record that bypasses all the conventions of a disco record. It’s got the groove and one of the most melancholic keyboard lines ever. How can one record be so darn sexy yet so sad? It’s the question I can never answer. Sob.
